Indian Wedding Traditions, Marriage Customs

Long-Lasting Hindu Weddings

Indian weddings are based on Hindi practices but they’re far from quiet occasions they can be very elaborate affairs lasting days. Brides heading to a wedding ceremony wear a sari provided by their parents. Once at the ceremony the bride will change into a red, white and gold sari that is provided by the groom. This symbolizes the passing of responsibility from the parents to the groom.

Colorful Indian Weddings

Indian weddings are loud, colorful celebrations. Indian brides don’t wear the traditional wedding dress they wear saris, which are a long wrap that goes around the waist and is draped over the shoulder. One common Indian tradition is the lighting of the sacred fire. The fire is kept as a testament to the illumination of knowledge and the purity of marriage. Modern traditions involve the groom placing a necklace of black and gold beads around the bride’s neck to invoke the goodwill and blessing of the goddess Lakshmi (goddess of wealth, fortune and pleasure) throughout their marriage.
