English Wedding Traditions, Marriage Customs

It Starts with a Kiss

On arrival the best man is sent by the groom to welcome the bride with a kiss on her cheek and deliver a bouquet of flowers. The bride arrives at the church in a car sent by the groom. It’s tradition at the reception to begin proceedings with the cutting of the cake, followed by the waltz and then dinner.

A Traditional Wedding Announcement

Three Sundays before the wedding an announcement is made at the church of where the couple will be married, called “the banns”. It’s bad luck for the bride and bridegroom to be present at the announcement. Weddings in England are traditionally held at noon, followed by a luncheon called a “wedding breakfast”.
