Czechoslovakian Wedding Traditions, Marriage Customs

The Bride’s cloak keeps the evil spirits away

At Bohemian weddings it’s traditional for the bride and groom to give specific wedding presents. The groom gives his bride a rosary, a fur hat, a prayer book and a customary wedding ring. The bride gives her groom a shirt which has been sewn with gold thread and colorful silks along with the wedding band. During the ceremony to keep the marriage free of evil spirits the best man covers the groom with the bride’s cloak.

Long Live the Tree

A Czech wedding tradition involves the bride’s friends who plant a tree in her yard. The tree is then decorated with colored ribbons and painted eggshells. Legend has it that the tree should live as long as the bride. Another tradition involving the bride’s friends occurs the night before the wedding. Friends give the bride a crown made out of rosemary which represents wisdom, love, loyalty and remembrance.
