Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue
This saying comes from Victorian times. Get “something old” to represent attachment to the old life: the family of the bride and her former life. Find “something new” to represent the new couple’s new life: their happiness, success, etc. The bride should find “something borrowed” from a happily married woman. It is meant to give her that same happiness. “Something blue” is for fidelity and constancy.

An interesting post as far as wedding traditions go. Being an American I’m surprised that I didn’t know about this one in the first place. I guess there’s always something new for us to learn about our place of origin.

Nice posting… In these Victorian times people sometimes combined the meaning of the 4 ’somethings’ into the wedding ring… An antique gold or silver ring that once belonged to a grandmother is old and borrowed, but also new to the couple. An unblemished blue Sapphire was believed to be able to remove poverty and provide health, wealth, longevity, happiness and prosperity. It’s a lovely tradition.
